He then sent against them Vespasian the Caesar who came and besieged Jerusalem for three years. There were in it three men of great wealth, Nakdimon b. Gorion, Ben Kalba Shabua’ and Ben Zizith Hakeseth…
Abba Sikra the head of the biryoni in Jerusalem was the son of the sister of Rabban Johanan b. Zakkai. [The latter] sent to him saying, Come to visit me privately. When he came he said to him, How long are you going to carry on in this way and kill all the people with starvation? He replied: What can I do? If I say a word to them, they will kill me. He said: Devise some plan for me to escape. Perhaps I shall be able to save a little. He said to him: Pretend to be ill, and let everyone come to inquire about you. Bring something evil smelling and put it by you so that they will say you are dead. Let then your disciples get under your bed, but no others, so that they shall not notice that you are still light, since they know that a living being is lighter than a corpse. He did so, and R. Eliezer went under the bier from one side and R. Joshua from the other. When they reached the door, some men wanted to put a lance through the bier. He said to them: Shall [the Romans] say. They have pierced their Master? They wanted to give it a push. He said to them: Shall they say that they pushed their Master? They opened a town gate for him and he got out.
When he reached the Romans he said, Peace to you, O king, peace to you, O king. He [Vespasian] said: Your life is forfeit on two counts, one because I am not a king and you call me king, and again, if I am a king, why did you not come to me before now? He replied: As for your saying that you are not a king,
…He said; I am now going, and will send someone to take my place. You can, however, make a request of me and I will grant it. He said to him: Give me Yavneh and its Wise Men, and the family chain of Rabban Gamaliel, and physicians to heal R. Zadok. R. Joseph, or some say R. Akiba, applied to him the verse, ‘[God] turneth wise men backward and maketh their knowledge foolish’. He ought to have said to him; Let them [the Jews] off this time. He, however, thought that so much he would not grant, and so even a little would not be saved.
How did the physicians heal R. Zadok? The first day they let him drink water in which bran had been soaked; on the next day water in which there had been coarse meal; on the next day water in which there had been flour, so that his stomach expanded little by little.

The Biryoni were then in the city. The Rabbis said to them: Let us go out and make peace with them [the Romans]. They would not let them, but on the contrary said, Let us go out and fight them. The Rabbis said: You will not succeed. They then rose up and burnt the stores of wheat and barley so that a famine ensued. Martha the daughter of Boethius was one of the richest women in Jerusalem. She sent her man-servant out saying, Go and bring me some fine flour. By the time he went it was sold out. He came and told her, There is no fine flour, but there is white [flour]. She then said to him, Go and bring me some. By the time he went he found the white flour sold out. He came and told her, There is no white flour but there is dark flour. She said to him, Go and bring me some. By the time he went it was sold out. He returned and said to her, There is no dark flour, but there is barley flour. She said, Go and bring me some. By the time he went this was also sold out. She had taken off her shoes, but she said, I will go out and see if I can find anything to eat. Some dung stuck to her foot and she died. Rabban Johanan b. Zakkai applied to her the verse, The tender and delicate woman among you which would not adventure to set the sole of her foot upon the ground. Some report that she ate a fig left by R. Zadok, and became sick and died. For R. Zadok observed fasts for forty years in order that Jerusalem might not be destroyed, [and he became so thin that] when he ate anything the food could be seen [as it passed through his throat.] When he wanted to restore himself, they used to bring him a fig, and he used to suck the juice and throw the rest away. When Martha was about to die, she brought out all her gold and silver and threw it in the street, saying, What is the good of this to me, thus giving effect to the verse, They shall cast their silver in the streets.

Forty years before the destruction of the Temple the Sanhedrin went into exile and took its seat in the marketplace.
and it has further been taught: ‘For forty years before the destruction of the Temple the thread of scarlet never turned white but it remained red’
Our Rabbis taught: During the last forty years before the destruction of the Temple the lot [‘For the Lord’] did not come up in the right hand; nor did the crimson-coloured strap become white; nor did the westernmost light shine; and the doors of the Hekal would open by themselves, until R. Johanan b. Zakkai rebuked them, saying: Hekal, Hekal, why wilt thou be the alarmer thyself? I know about thee that thou wilt be destroyed, for Zechariah ben Ido has already prophesied concerning thee: Open thy doors, O Lebanon, that the fire may devour thy cedars.

Rabbah b. Bar Hana said: What is the meaning of the passage, The fear of the Lord prolongeth days,’ but the years of the wicked shall be shortened? ‘The fear of the Lord prolongeth days’ refers to the first Sanctuary, which remained standing for four hundred and ten years and in which there served only eighteen high priests. ‘But the years of the wicked shall be shortened’ refers to the second Sanctuary, which abided for four hundred and twenty years and at which more than three hundred [high] priests served . Take off therefrom the forty years which Simeon the Righteous served, eighty years which Johanan the high priest served, ten, which Ishmael b. Fabi served, or, as some say, the eleven years of R. Eleazar b. Harsum. Count [the number of high priests] from then on and you will find that none of them completed his year [in office].

Mishnah. They delivered to him elders from the elders of the court and they read before him [throughout the seven days] out of the order of the day. they said to him, sir high priest, read you yourself with your own mouth, perchance you have forgotten or perchance you have never learnt. On the eve of the day of atonement in the morning they place him at the eastern gate and pass before him oxen, rams and sheep, that he may learn to know and become familiar with the service. Throughout the seven days they did not withhold food or drink from him. But on the eve of the day of atonement near nightfall they would not let him eat much because food brings about sleep.

GEMARA. It is quite right that [they assume] perchance he has forgotten, but that he never learnt, do we ever appoint men of that type? Surely it has been taught: And the priest that is highest among his brethren, that means he should be highest among his brethren in strength, in beauty, in wisdom, and in riches. Others say: Whence do we know that if he does not possess [any wealth], his brethren, the priests, endow him? To teach us that it says: ‘And the priest who is great by reason of his brethren’, i.e., make him great from what his brethren have? -R. Joseph said: That is no difficulty. One refers to the first Temple, the other to the second, for R. Assi said: A tarkabful of denars did Martha, the daughter of Boethus give to King Jannai to nominate Joshua ben Gamala as one of the high priests.

MISHNAH. [A priest who] betrothed a widow, and was subsequently appointed high priest, may consummate the marriage. It once happened with Joshua b. Gamala that he betrothed Martha the daughter of Boethus, and the king appointed him high priest, and he, nevertheless, consummated the marriage…. IT ONCE HAPPENED TO JOSHUA etc. He APPOINTED HIM but he was not elected! Said R. Joseph: I see here a conspiracy; for R. Assi, in fact, related that Martha the daughter of Boethus brought to King Jannai a tarkab of denarii before he gave an appointment to Joshua b. Gamala among the High Priests.
R. Zadok said: make them not a crown wherewith to magnify thyself, nor a spade, wherewith to dig; even so was Hillel wont to say, ‘and he who makes [unworthy] use of the crown [of learning] passeth away.’ lo, [hence] thou hast learnt: anyone who derives worldly benefit from the words of the Torah, removes his life from the world.
Do not be shocked regarding (the virtue of) Yosef HaTzaddik, for Rabbi Zadok was the Gadol HaDor, when he was kidnapped in Rome, a matron took him and sent a beautiful maid, when he saw her he turned at looked at the wall so he would not see her, and he sat (facing the wall) and was immersed in study the entire night. In the morning the maid got up and went to the Matron, and said “I would rather be dead than given to that man”. The Matron summoned him and asked why did you not act with the woman in the manner which all men usually do? He responded and said “what can I do? I am from the family of the Kohen Gadol, and from a prestigious family, I thought if I am intimate with her, I will cause there to be more illegitimate children in Israel” when she heard this she commanded for him to be sent away with great honor.

Our Rabbis taught: It once happened that two priests were equal as they ran to mount the ramp and when one of them came first within four cubits of the altar, the other took a knife and thrust it into his heart. R. Zadok stood on the steps of the Hall and said: Our brethren of the house of Israel, hear ye! Behold it says: If one be found slain in the land... then thy elders and judges shall come forth . . . On whose behalf shall we offer the heifer whose neck is to be broken, on behalf of the city or on behalf of the Temple Courts? All the people burst out weeping. The father of the young man came and found him still in convulsions. He said: ‘May he be an atonement for you. My son is still in convulsions and the knife has not become unclean.’ [His remark] comes to teach you that the cleanness of their vessels was of greater concern to them even than the shedding of blood.
…‘R. Zadok stood upon the steps of the Hall and called out: Our brethren of the House of Israel, hear ye! Behold it says: If one be found slain in the land. On whose behalf shall we bring the heifer whose neck is to be broken, on behalf of the city or of the Temple Courts?’ But does [the community of] Jerusalem bring a heifer whose neck is to be broken? Surely it has been taught: Ten things were said concerning Jerusalem and this is one of them — it does not have to bring a heifer whose neck is to be broken. Furthermore: And it be not known who hath smitten him but here it is known who has smitten him?-Rather [he put his question rhetorically] to increase the weeping.
Once Rebbe Zadok entered the Beit Hamikdash and he saw the Beit Hamikdash destroyed, he said “my Father in heaven, You have destroyed Your city You burnt the sanctuary, and You sat silently in peace”. Immediately Rebbe Zadok fell asleep and he saw God delivering a eulogy, and the ministering angels eulogizing after Him, and he said woe to the faithful of Jerusalem

21. How the faithful city has become a harlot! It was full of judgment; righteousness lodged in it; but now murderers. …26. And I will restore your judges as at the first, and your counselors as at the beginning; afterward you shall be called, The city of righteousness, the faithful city.27. Zion shall be redeemed with judgment, and those who return to her with righteousness.
Raba said: Jerusalem was destroyed only because men of faith ceased therein: for it is said, Run ye to and fro in the streets of Jerusalem, and see now, and know, and seek in the broad places thereof, if ye can find a man, if there be any that doeth justly, that seeketh faithfulness; and I will pardon her.
As noted above, all the work involved in gathering in the exiles is in preparation of setting up and “maintaining people of truth, ” in order to reach the level of redemption of the truth and sanctifying God and repairing the world in the Malchut of the Almighty that is the goal of the complete Redemption.  For without the existence of people of truth, there is no hope, God forbid, for all the work involved in the beginning of the Redemption.  As written, “Jerusalem was destroyed because people of Truth were missing from it” [Talmud Bavli, Shabbat 119b]

When Tisha Bav Falls on Shabbat

summary of audio - When Tisha B'Av Falls on Shabbat (are marital relations allowed)
audio:

When Tisha Bav Falls on Shabbat
Question: When Tisha B’Av is on Shabbat and the fast is postponed until Sunday, are there any prohibitions on Shabbat?

Answer:
According to the simple reading of the Talmudic sources[1], and the rulings of the vast majority of Rishonim –including Rif, Rambam[2], and Rosh[3],– there are absolutely no aspects of mourning practiced certainly not public expressions of mourning, and even private expressions of mourning. This opinion has been codified by Rav Yosef Karo[4] who explicitly states that marital relations would be allowed on this Shabbat. There is a minority opinion of the Or Zarua which is cited with some degree of skepticism by some Rishonim,[5] which mandate private expressions of mourning. The Rama rules according to this opinion[6]. Later Ashkenazik[7] deciders tend to limit the scope of this ruling, and state in the case of conflict – for example “liel tivilah” or for that matter whenever there will be a biblical obligation of the commandment of onah – such an obligation would outweigh this custom. The Vilna Gaon completely rejects the Or Zaruah and the Rama and rules like Rav Yosef Karo. [8]

Conclusion- Sefardim follow the Shulachan Oruch. Ashkenazim are on firm ground to follow the ruling of the Vilna Gaon, as it does represent the Talmudic decision and that of the majority of Rishnonim.

Question: When Tisha Bav is nidche – pushed off to Sunday, are all of the laws just as severe as a conventional year?
Answer – When Tisha Bav falls on a “regular day” the laws of Tisha Bav take precedence over a brit – hence the brit would be done in the late afternoon and the celebration delayed until after the fast.[9] However, when Tisha Bav is pushed off from Shabbat to Sunday the Mechaber rules that a person who is making a brit prays mincha early and may then wash and eat.[10] The Mishna Brura cites a similar leniency[11] regarding those who are somewhat not feeling well, and regarding women who are pregnant and do not feel perfect. These leniencies indicate that Tisha Bav which is pushed to Sunday is not treated with the same severity. In situations where questions arise please consult a competent rabbininc authority.

Notes tisha bav on shabbat
1 which means according to rebbe there is no 9bav on Shabbat.
2 tashbetz explains the other side (not rebbe) fast of the 4th month and 5th month is non specific, and therefore the day picked is the “real fast” and there is nothing on Shabbat
4 yerushalmi – when tisha bav is Shabbat (and pushed to Sunday) there is no שבוע שחל בו
Neither the week before – since it is NOT on Shabbat, and not the next week because it is on Sunday
5 tosefta – Shabbat of tish bav – lack nothing – meal fit for a king
6 TB adds erev tisha bav, (no seuda mafseket – which is a Talmud ordained meal, not eating meat or drinking wine which we have for 9 days is as far as the gemara concerned only on erev)
Takes away the last clause “ואין מונע מעצמו כלום
7 ramban – according to tosefta דברים שבצינעא  are allowed
8 rambam seems to agree, fuses the gemara with the tosefta
9 Hagahot maimoniot seems to agree with the rambam tells us so did the rokeach, but reports that the Or Zarua was assur – his student the Maharam (teacher of the Hagahot maimoniot ) disagreed – but instructed to follow his rebbe (even though he disagreed)
10 Rosh cites the Maharam – and concludes against him – like the Tosefta
(basically a rabbinic primary source a tosefta – wins against a Rishon)
11 – Rashba – it is not Tisha Bav, any way would have been more appropriate to commemorate the fast on the 10th. See #12
12 Rav Yochanan – the fast should always be on the 10th
13 many calamities happened on 9th bav
15 machloket mechaber –rama
Sometimes the machloket is based on the peculiar fashion that the Mechaber decides Halacha – 2 of 3 of Rif Rosh and Rambam while the Rama follows local minhag.
Levush like Rama
16 shla limits the rama – mitzvah of onah trumps this minhag
17 magen avraham cites the shla –and says - rely on the first opinion
19 gra tosefta supports the mechaber
Kitzur SA says “assur” unless leil tivilah
23 Chai adam strong language – has no law of 9bav – hold yourself back is a SIN
24 Nishmat adam – not only lel tvilah – also haba min haderech – (or) whenever the wife is mitaveh – it is a torah level miutzvah – which trumps this minhag he calls it a minhag – and says there is NO MINHAG on liel tvila
Yet he says “והכל לפי מה שהוא אדםwhich is strange since it should not only be dependent on his “being a man”
25 mishna brurah relies on gra and shla and magen Avraham – leil tvila
27 kaf hachaim – if this chumara will lead to any a takala or a kula – better ignoring it (calls it a chumra)
28 oruch hashulchan minhag  is to be strict, unless leil tviulah – then OBLIGATED to fulfill mitzvah
29 shulchan oruch on a nidcha – a baal bris does not complete the fast – which is inconsistent with the law on 9th bav when there is a bris.
32 we are lenient on a nidcha regarding a “little sick” or pregnant michush kzat – feels a little discomfort – don’t fast
Apparently according to this opinion (which started with the mechaber) a nidcha is not the real 9bav – but apparently neither was Shabbat (unless it was 9bav – but with a prohibition on mourning)

43 Chay adam – the 10th has no law of the tenth – so things are allowed that night – unless it is an “extention of the fast (no waiting to chatzot)
Not learning on Shabbat afternoon
49 Gra chumra yitarah
