A Multifaceted Injury

As Yaakov heads home he is filled with dread as the inevitable meeting with his estranged brother looms. It seems more likely that this will be a showdown – or even a massacre - than a happy family reunion or a celebratory homecoming. And so, Yaakov prepares, in a fatalistic frame of mind; concerned, if not convinced, that blood will be spilled, he divides his family and possessions into two camps.

And Yaakov was terrified and pained, he divided the people who accompanied him, and the flock, cattle and camels into two camps. He said should Esav come and annihilate one camp the other one would escape. (Bereishit 32:8,9)

Interestingly, the rabbis describe this as preparation for battle,[1] even though the verses do not indicate any proactive offensive military tactics or on Yaakov’s part. It would therefore be more accurate to describe Yaakov’s preparations as a desperate attempt at damage control – to minimize the anticipated toll of death and destruction. It was a strategy for partial survival. The news that Esav was on the way accompanied by four hundred men, presumably a formidable fighting force, had sent Yaakov into despair.

Lest we take the size of Esav’s entourage lightly, we should recall that the first “world war” – the war of the four kings against the five kings - was won when Avraham entered the fray with three hundred and eighteen men.[2] With an even larger fighting force than that now bearing down on him and his family, Yaakov’s fear is based on a realistic analysis of the situation. Esav’s hatred, which Yaakov has every reason to believe has metastasized into a deadly obsession, is now backed up by a small – or perhaps not so small – army.

In an act of desperation, Yaakov prays:

Then Yaakov said, “O God of my father Avraham and God of my father Yitzchak, O God, who said to me, ‘Return to your native land and I will do good things for you’! I am unworthy of all the kindness that You have done for Your servant, for with my staff alone I crossed this Jordan, and now I have become two camps. Deliver me, I pray, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esav; for I fear, he may come and strike me down, mothers and children alike. Yet You have said, ‘I will most certainly cause good things for you and make your offspring as the sands of the sea, which are too numerous to count.’” (Bereishit 32:10-13)

Yaakov’s prayer is full of pathos. He articulates his fear of a bloodbath; he is afraid that neither he nor his family, and especially his children, will survive the confrontation with Esav, and he challenges God on this point: God had promised that everything would work out, that his offspring would be as numerous as the grains of sand on the shore, that Yaakov would have Divine protection. Nonetheless, the reality of his situation is bleak, and Yaakov’s plea is met with silence.

As observers, we are unsure what to do with this prayer. On the one hand, a man of faith who senses his impending mortality has no choice but to pray. In a very real sense, this is a prayer we wish Avraham had allowed himself to utter: “God, how can You command me to bring my child as an offering? You are a God of kindness and mercy; aside from the moral grotesqueness of the act, you made a very explicit promise to me that Yitzchak would inherit my mission and my blessings, and through him the Divine promise will come to fruition.” Yet Avraham’s faith did not allow him to utter this prayer. Is Yaakov’s faith less perfect? Does the content of his prayer or the fact that he is so fearful indicate that Yaakov’s faith is lacking in some way?

On more than one occasion, God had assured Yaakov that He would be with him as a protector:

He had a dream; a stairway (variously translated as “ramp” or “ladder”) was set on the ground and its top reached to the sky, and angels of God were going up and down on it.  And God was standing above him, and He said, “I am the Eternal, the God of your father Avraham and the God of Yitzchak. The ground on which you are lying I will give to you and to your offspring. Your descendants shall be as (numerous as) the dust of the earth; you shall spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All the families of the earth will be blessed through you and your descendants. Behold, I am with you: I will protect you wherever you go and will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” (Bereishit 28:12-15)

Now he heard the things that Lavan’s sons were saying: “Yaakov has taken all that was our father’s, and from that which was our father’s he has built up all this wealth.” Yaakov also saw that Lavan’s manner toward him was not as it had been in the past. Then God said to Yaakov, “Return to the land of your fathers where you were born, and I will be with you.”… And in the dream an angel of God said to me, ‘Yaakov!’ and I answered, ‘I am here.’ And he said, ‘Note well that all the he-goats which are mating with the flock are streaked, speckled, and mottled; for I have noted all that Lavan has been doing to you. I am the God of Beit El, where you anointed a pillar and where you made a vow to Me. Now arise and leave this land and return to your native land.’” (Bereishit 31:1-3,11-13)

The verses, or what is not recorded in them, should lead us to consider that perhaps God had been at work behind the scenes, and had micro-managed the dramatic change of heart that unfolds. This would certainly conform to the earlier instances in which adversaries were given a “gentle reminder” from God that He is watching, and that it would be ill-advised to harm His favorite protagonist: Avimelech and Lavan[3] received nocturnal visitations from God in which they were warned to “be nice” to Avraham and Yaakov respectively.

But God came to Avimelech in a dream by night and said to him, “You will die because of the woman that you have taken, for she is a married woman.” Now Avimelech had not approached her. He said, “O Lord, will You kill people even though innocent? He himself said to me, ‘She is my sister’! And she also said, ‘He is my brother.’ When I did this, my heart was blameless, and my hands were clean.” And God said to him in the dream, “I knew that you did this with a blameless heart, and so I kept you from sinning against Me. That was why I did not let you touch her. Therefore, return the man’s wife—since he is a prophet, he will intercede for you to save your life. If you fail to return her, know that you will die, you and all that are yours.” Early next morning, Avimelech called his servants and told them all these things; and the men were greatly frightened. (Bereishit 20:3-8)

But God appeared to Lavan the Aramean in a dream by night and said to him, “Beware of saying anything to Yaakov, good or bad.” …And Lavan said to Yaakov, “What have you done, betraying me (literally: stealing my heart) and carrying my daughters off like prisoners of war? Why did you flee in secrecy and mislead me and not tell me? I would have sent you off with festive music, with timbrel and lyre. You did not even let me kiss my sons and daughters good-by! It was a foolish thing for you to do. I have it in my power to do you harm; but the God of your father said to me last night, ‘Beware of saying anything to Yaakov, good or bad.’ (Bereishit 31:24-29)

One wonders if despite assembling his fighting force, Esav had received a similar warning the night before the confrontation, or perhaps we can imagine as Yaakov was struggling with “angel of Esav”:[4] When the moment for battle presents itself, the macho Esav quite remarkably and unexpectedly melts into an emotional mess, and comes running, weeping, to embrace his brother. Perhaps in this case as well, God had pulled the strings, turning Esav into a passive marionette and orchestrating a peaceful homecoming. We may imagine a “split screen:” as Yaakov prays to God in the dark of night and “reminds” Him of His promise, God is already “on it”- and Esav is in the process of being neutralized. Perhaps, as Yaakov spends the night alone and faces the “angel” of Esav, his twin brother is experiencing a parallel struggle, and spends the night facing Yaakov’s angel, who convinces Esav that he can go no further, and that Yaakov, who deserves his respect and his love, will remain unscathed.

Yaakov sends gifts to Esav, and hopes for a reprieve:

After spending the night there, he selected from what was at hand a gift offering for his brother Esav: 200 she-goats and 20 he-goats; 200 ewes and 20 rams; 30 milch camels with their colts; 40 cows and 10 bulls; 20 she-asses and 10 he-asses. These he put in the hands of his servants, flock by block, and he told his servants, “Go on ahead of me, and keep a distance between the flocks.” He instructed the one in front as follows, “When my brother Esav meets you and asks you, ‘Whose man are you? Where are you going? And whose [animals] are these ahead of you?’ you shall answer, ‘Your servant Yaakov’s; they are a gift sent to my lord Esav; and [Yaakov] himself is right behind us.’” He gave similar instructions to the second one, and the third, and all the others who followed the flocks, namely, “Thus shall you say to Esav when you reach him. And you shall add, ‘And your servant Yaakov himself is right behind us.’” For he reasoned, “If I propitiate him with presents in advance, and then face him, perhaps he will show me favor.” And so, the gift went on ahead, while he remained in camp that night. (Bereishit 32:14-32)

At the last minute, there is movement, and a change of strategy:

That same night he arose, and taking his two wives, his two maidservants, and his eleven children, he crossed the ford of the Yabbok. After taking them across the stream, he brought across all his possessions. (Bereishit 32:23-24)

Perhaps Yaakov fears that Esav has extracted information regarding Yaakov’s whereabouts and tactics, so Yaakov moves his camp (camps?). He also seems to reach the conclusion that he himself is a liability: anyone found with him will be in mortal danger. Yaakov spends the night away from his family, alone – or not alone:

Yaakov was left alone. And a man wrestled with him until the break of dawn. When he saw that he could not prevail against him, he wrenched Yaakov’s hip at its socket, so that the socket of his hip was strained as he wrestled with him. Then he said, “Let me go, for dawn is breaking.” But he answered, “I will not let you go, unless you bless me.” He said to him, “What is your name?” He replied, “Yaakov.” Said he, “Your name shall no longer be Yaakov, but Yisrael, for you have striven with beings both Divine and human, and have prevailed.” And Yaakov questioned, and said, “Pray speak your name.” But he said, “Why would you ask my name,” and he blessed him there. And Yaakov named the place Peniel, “for I have seen the Divine face to face, yet my life has been spared.” The sun rose upon him as he passed Penuel, limping on his hip. That is why the children of Israel to this day do not eat the thigh muscle that is on the socket of the hip, since Yaakov’s hip socket was wrenched at the thigh muscle. (Bereishit 32:25-32)

This section raises many questions, including the strange and confusing way it is written, with each verse revealing only limited and obscure information that requires much clarification and explanation. The texture of the narrative suggests a dream-like quality: Yaakov is alone in the dark night, struggling to stay awake and alert but in desperate need of sleep. He has spent the greater part of his life as a shepherd, and proven himself both dedicated and highly skilled at it; in his parting words to Lavan, he took pride in the fact that he had never slept on the job and he had kept faithful watch over the flocks through the long nights in Lavan’s employ.[5] But now, when he must protect his own flock and family, an assailant takes him by surprise.

We should also note the connection to an earlier episode: When he left the land of Israel (Canaan) years earlier, Yakkov had slept under the stars and dreamed of angels ascending and descending a ladder to heaven. Now, years later, one of those angels comes down to have a word with - and “have a go at” -Yaakov, and then begs to be released so that he can once again ascend.

When the battle ends, we are not sure who was victorious.[6] Of course, for Yaakov, survival is victory; nonetheless, Yaakov is wounded, his thigh is hurt, his sciatic nerve damaged. What is the meaning of this strange episode – the message, the significance of this struggle? The long-term effects are as baffling as the incident itself: There is a change of name, from Yaakov to Yisrael, but that change is actually made later in the narrative by God Himself [7]; why the seeming redundance? The prohibition against eating the part of the animal parallel to Yaakov’s injured gid hanashe, as a testimony to this struggle, could just as easily have been communicated at Mount Sinai in the context of the codex of laws pertaining to kosher versus forbidden foods.[8] Moreover, the verses offer no insight as to the why this particular part of Yaakov’s body was hurt.

On a functional level, the sciatic injury should have prevented Yaakov from doing something which he nonetheless does: Yaakov bows down to his brother. In fact, when they meet, Yaakov and his entire family bow before Esav.  Coupled with the gifts, the message is very clear: Yaakov hopes to “undo” the cause of their falling out, to reverse the blessings which he took surreptitiously, the source of the of Esav’s rage:

Blessed be they who bless you.” (Bereishit 27:28,29)

Looking up, Yaakov saw Esav coming, accompanied by four hundred men. He divided the children among Leah, Rachel, and the two maids, putting the maids and their children first, Leah and her children next, and Rachel and Yosef last. He himself went on ahead and bowed low to the ground seven times until he was near his brother. Esav ran to greet him. He embraced him and, falling on his neck, he kissed him; and they wept. He raised his eyes and saw the women and the children, and he said, “Who are these with you?” He answered, “The children with whom God has favored your servant.” Then the maids, with their children, came forward and bowed; next Leah, with her children, came forward and bowed; and last, Yosef and Rachel came forward and bowed. (Bereishit 33:1-7)

The bowing was certainly a conciliatory gesture, and we might ask whether the injury sustained the night before was God’s way of preventing Yaakov from bowing to his brother, or at least making it more difficult for Yaakov to prostrate himself before Esav. Rabbinic commentaries were critical of Yaakov/Yisrael groveling before Esav, and some even go so far as to opine that the injury to his hip was not a proactive tactic to prevent this behavior but as a sign - from the parallel confrontation between Yaakov and the angel of Esav - that a punishment was due for bending his knee in front of Esav.

This approach has implications for the events that would take place in the future, recorded in Megilat Esther: Haman, a protagonist whom tradition describes as a descendant of Esav, insists that all bow to him. Mordechai alone refuses to bow – and our sages draw a direct connection to his ancestry: Mordechai was from the family of Binyamin, the only son of Yaakov who did not bow before Esav, primarily because he had not yet been born when Yaakov returned to Canaan and faced his brother.[9]

And Mordechai would not bow or prostrate. [Haman] said, “You surely know that you will be subject to the sword (death). What did you see (think) that you ignore the orders of the king? He [Mordechai] replied, “Because I am a Jew,” [Haman] said, “But we find that your ancestors bowed to my ancestors, as it says, ‘seven times he bowed to the ground.’” [Mordechai] said, “My forefather Binyamin was in his mother’s womb and did not bow, and his descendant will not bow, as it says, ‘ish Yemini’ (a man of Binyamin). Just as my ancestor did not bow, neither will I bow to you. Therefore it states, “And Mordechai would not bow or prostrate.”

To unravel the significance of the injury specifically to Yaakov’s thigh, we might consider other appearances of the word yerech (thigh). The first is in the verses preceding the candidate search for a wife for Yitzchak. When Avraham sends his servant on a quest for an appropriate bride for his son – much like the trip upon which Yaakov would embark two generations later - Avraham instructs the servant to place his hand under his yerech:

Avraham was now old, advanced in years, and God blessed Avraham in all things. And Avraham said to the senior servant of his household, who had charge of all that he owned, “Put your hand under my thigh and I will make you swear by the Eternal, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites among whom I dwell, but will go to the land of my birth and get a wife for my son Yitzchak.” (Bereishit 24:1-4)

Later, Yaakov insists on this same gesture:

And when the time approached for Yisrael to die, he summoned his son Yosef and said to him, “If I have found favor in your eyes, place your hand under my thigh and treat me with compassion and truth: please do not bury me in Egypt. When I lie down with my fathers, carry me up from Egypt and bury me in their burial-place.” He replied, “I will do as you have spoken.” And he said, “Swear to me.” And he swore to him. Then Yisrael bowed at the head of the bed. (Bereishit 47:29-31)

In both of these instances, this symbolic gesture signifyied the making of a vow, and both of these vows shared a common denominator: the Land of Israel. The servant is instructed not to take Yitzchak out of Israel, and Yaakov makes Yosef promise to return his remains for burial in Israel. Perhaps, then, the message of the thigh injury suffered by Yaakov is also intertwined with the Land of Israel: Yaakov has delayed his return to the Land of Israel, and his injury was a physical expression of this failure. Another possible angle throws us back to the night Yaakov left the Land of Israel (Canaan) and had his dream under the stars. When he awoke, he, too, had made a vow. Perhaps the wound to his thigh is an indication that too much time has elapsed and the vow had not been fulfilled. God reminds Yaakov repeatedly to keep this vow, and there may even be reason to believe that the death of Rachel may be related to his failure to have done so.

Yaakov then made a vow, saying, “If God remains with me, if He protects me on this journey that I am making, and gives me bread to eat and clothing to wear, and if I return safely to my father’s house—the Eternal shall be my God. And this stone, which I have set up as a pillar, shall be God’s abode; and of all that You give me, I will set aside a tithe for You.” (Bereishit 28:20-22)

Yaakov promised that the monument (matzevah) he erected at the site of his epiphany would become a “house of God;” God reminds him to keep his vow and build an altar. However, even after reading the entire narrative of Yaakov-Yisrael’s life, we are unsure if this vow was fulfilled. We know nothing about the construction of a “house of God,” but when Rachel dies before the family reaches its destination, Yaakov builds another monument-matzevah:

God said to Yaakov, “Arise, go up to Beit El and remain there; and build an altar there to the God who appeared to you when you were fleeing from your brother Esav.” So Yaakov said to his household and to all who were with him, “Rid yourselves of the alien gods in your midst, purify yourselves, and change your clothes. Come, let us go up to Beit El, and I will build an altar there to the God who answered me when I was in distress and who has been with me wherever I have gone.” They gave to Yaakov all the alien gods that they had, and the rings that were in their ears, and Yaakov buried them under the terebinth that was near Shechem. As they set out, a terror from God fell on the cities round about, so that they did not pursue the sons of Yaakov. Thus Yaakov came to Luz—that is, Beit El—in the land of Canaan, he and all the people who were with him. There he built an altar and named the site El-Beit El, for it was there that God had revealed Himself to him when he was fleeing from his brother.Devorah, Rivkah’s nurse, died, and was buried under the oak below Beit El; so it was named Alon-bachut (the ‘oak of weeping’). God appeared again to Yaakov on his arrival from Paddan Aram, and He blessed him. God said to him, “You whose name is Yaakov, You shall be called Yaakov no more, but Yisrael shall be your name.” Thus He named him Yisrael. And God said to him, “I am El ShaddaiBe fertile and increase; A nation, yea an assembly of nations, shall descend from you. Kings shall issue from your loins. The land that I assigned to Avraham and Yitzchak I assign to you; And to your offspring to come I assign the land.” God parted from him at the spot where He had spoken to him; and Yaakov set up a pillar at the site where He had spoken to him, a pillar of stone, and he offered a libation on it and poured oil upon it. Yaakov named the site where God had spoken to him Beit El. They set out from Beit El; but when they were still some distance short of Efrat, Rachel was in childbirth, and she had hard labor. When her labor was at its hardest, the midwife said to her, “Have no fear, for it is another boy for you.” But as her soul departed, for she was dyingshe named him Ben-oni; but his father called him Binyamin. Thus Rachel died. She was buried on the road to Efrat, that is Bethlehem; and Yaakov erected a monument on her burial site, which is the monument of Rachel’s tomb to this very day.

A further possible connection with Yaakov’s vow to build a “house of God” is that the term yerech, is used repeatedly to describe elements in the construction of the Mishkan:[10]

He placed the table in the Tent of Meeting, outside the curtain, on the northern yerech(flank) of the Tabernacle. Upon it he laid out the setting of bread before God, as God had commanded Moshe. He placed the menorah in the Tent of Meeting opposite the table, on the south yerech  (flank) of the Tabernacle. And he lit the lamps before God, as God had commanded Moshe. (Shmot 40:22-25)

Yaakov’s vow to build a house for God may explain the midrashic tradition that the central beam for the Mishkan was brought down to Egypt by Yaakov himself, indicating that the vow would eventually be kept.

Rav Avraham Shur (Torat Haim) surmises that when Yaakov purchased the birthright in exchange for some food, Esav had put his hand on Yaakov’s thigh to make a vow and formalize the deal. Therefore, Esav’s patron was attempting to cancel the deal and made the move toward the thigh of Yaakov.[11]

The yerech may also have sexual connotations: later, when the Torah speaks of Yaakov’s children, it uses the word yerech:

The total number of persons that were of Yaakov’s issue (literally, from his thigh) came to seventy, Yosef being already in Egypt.

The midrash observes that as a result of this very particular injury, those who come from the yerech of Yaakov – the righteous men and women, the prophets and prophetesses - became susceptible to harm:

“He wounded the socket or Yaakov’s thigh” – he injured the righteous men and women, the prophets and prophetesses that would be his future descendants. When would this occur? In the time of persecution.

Soon enough Yaakov will experience a great deal of pain and sorrow due to events caused by his children: Reuven’s[12] indiscretion, the abuse of Dina and the subsequent behavior of Shimon and Levi, the sale of Yosef, and the behavior of Yehuda all come to mind. Perhaps these events can be related to the injured thigh of Yaakov.

There is another use of the word yerech that is also related to sexuality, in what may be called the case of ‘sexual miscue.’ In the section discussing the sotah, a woman guilty of the indiscretion of being secluded with a man other than her husband - and perhaps of additional guilt during that ill-advised seclusion - the word yerech appears once again:

God spoke to Moshe, saying, “Speak to the children of Israel, and tell them: ‘If any man’s wife goes astray, and is unfaithful to him, and a man lies with her carnally, and it is hidden from the eyes of her husband, and is kept secret, and she is defiled, and there is no witness against her, and she isn’t caught in the act; and the spirit of jealousy comes on him, and he is jealous of his wife, and she is defiled: or if the spirit of jealousy comes on him, and he is jealous of his wife, and she was not defiled: then the man shall bring his wife to the kohen, and shall bring her offering for her: the tenth part of an ephah of barley meal. He shall pour no oil on it, nor put frankincense on it, for it is a meal offering of jealousy, a meal offering of memorial, a reminder of iniquity. The kohen shall bring her near, and stand her before God; and the kohen shall take holy water in an earthen vessel; and of the dust that is on the floor of the Tabernacle the kohen shall take, and put it into the water. The kohen shall stand the woman before God, and let the hair of the woman’s head go loose, and put the meal offering of memorial in her hands, which is the meal offering of jealousy. The kohen shall have in his hand the water of bitterness that brings a curse. The kohen shall make her take an oath, and shall tell the woman, “If no man has lain with you, and if you haven’t gone astray to impurity instead of your husband, be free from this water of bitterness that brings a curse. But if you have gone astray with another instead of your husband, and if you are defiled, and some man has lain with you besides your husband:” then the kohen shall cause the woman to swear with the oath of cursing, and the kohen shall tell the woman, “May Hashem make you a curse and an oath among your people, when Hashem allows your thigh to fall away, and your body to swell; and this water that brings a curse will go into your bowels, and make your body swell, and your thigh fall away.” The woman shall say, “Amen, Amen.”  “‘The kohen shall write these curses in a book, and he shall blot them out into the water of bitterness. He shall make the woman drink the water of bitterness that causes the curse; and the water that causes the curse shall enter into her and become bitter. The kohen shall take the meal offering of jealousy out of the woman’s hand, and shall wave the meal offering before God, and bring it to the altar. The kohen shall take a handful of the meal offering, as its memorial, and burn it on the altar, and afterward shall make the woman drink the water. When he has made her drink the water, then it shall be that if she is defiled, and has committed a trespass against her husband, that the water that causes the curse will enter into her and become bitter, and her body will swell, and her thigh will fall away: and the woman will be a curse among her people. If the woman isn’t defiled, but is clean, then she shall be free, and shall conceive.  “‘This is the law of jealousy, when a wife, goes astray from her husband and is defiled; or when the spirit of jealousy comes on a man, and he is jealous of his wife; then he shall stand the woman before God, and the kohen shall erform on her this entire process of the law. The man shall be free from iniquity, and that woman shall bear her iniquity.’”

Rabbi Haim Ben Bezalel in his Helek Haim makes the connection between the sotah and the wounded thigh of Yaakov. [13]

What sexual sin could Yaakov have been guilty of? From the perspective of the laws later given to his descendants at Sinai, Yaakov was indeed guilty of the sin of marrying two sisters. Although this was clearly neither his intention nor his desire but was the result of his victimization at the hands of Lavan, nonetheless Yaakov was married to two sisters. Now, at the moment before he will stand – or bow - before Esav, his own conscience must be clear and his behavior immaculate. Esav’s ‘angel’, the expression of Esav’s essence or the representative of Esav’s claims against Yaakov, had found Yaakov’s proverbial Achilles heel.[14] The assailant attacks Yaakov’s point of weakness, and manages to cause injury to Yaakov’s yerech

In Shnei Luchot Habrit (“The Shlah”), Rabbi Yeshayahu Horwitz contends that even though marrying two sisters was not a sin in the pre-Sinai period, it was nonetheless inappropriate,[15]and the fallout resulted in the episodes that followed, involving Dina and Reuven respectively.[16]

Another use of the word yerech denotes fear or dread, specifically fear of battle. A literal translation might be ‘softness’ or ‘faintness’ of heart:

(1) When you go forth to battle against your enemies, and see horses, chariots, and a people more numerous than you, you shall not be afraid of them; for the Eternal, Almighty God is with you, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt. It shall be, when you draw near to the battle, that the kohen shall approach and speak to the people, and shall tell them, “Hear, Israel, you draw near this day to battle against your enemies: don’t let your heart faint; don’t be afraid, nor tremble, neither be scared of them; for God your Lord is He who goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.” The officers shall speak to the people, saying, “What man is there who has built a new house, and has not dedicated it? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it. What man is there who has planted a vineyard, and has not used its fruit? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man use its fruit. What man is there who has pledged to be married a wife, and has not taken her? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her.” The officers shall speak further to the people, and they shall say, “What man is there who is fearful and fainthearted? Let him go and return to his house, lest he melt his brother’s heart as he has his own.” It shall be, when the officers finish speaking to the people, they shall appoint captains of armies at the head of the people.

While the association may seem like no more than a play on words, a verse in the Book of Iyov (Job) describes strengthens the association between the yerech and this particular type of faintheartedness: The thighs are described with a word conjugated from the root pachad -fear.[17]

He makes his tail stand up like a cedar; The sinews of his thighs (literally, fears) are knit together.

There is another use of the word yerech which may be an embellishment of an imaginary word.

Esav is described as a man of the field:

The boys grew up. Esav was a man skilled in hunting, a man of the field, while Yaakov was a simple man, a dweller in tents.

The Targum translates “a man of the field” as nchash yirchan or nchashyirchan (or, alternatively, as nchashyadchon).[18] The Aramaic words for ish sadeh, a man of the field, were unfamiliar to some commentaries; a number of commentaries of the Tosafot school explained it as a serene, “laid back” or lazy personality,[19] while other Tosafists associate it with the practice of magic.[20] The diversity of comments on these two Aramaic words is striking.

The Tzioni relates a kabbalistic tradition in which Esav (and by extension, his emissary/representative “angel”), who is associated with all forms of evil ranging from Amalek to the Serpent in Eden, proudly owned up to this dubious affiliation, and had a tattoo of a serpent on his thigh; this explains the Aramaic term “nchash yirchan” - “serpent on the thigh”.[21]

The Tzioni’s comments connect the ideological strand that began in the Garden of Eden and runs through the verses describing the birth of Yaakov and Esav all the way down to Amalek, a great-grandson of Esav; other sources[22] take up this same strand and connect it to the protagonists of the Purim story.

The Talmud[23] refers to Haman as a servant who was sold for bread; Targum Yonatan elaborates, and recounts a scene in which Mordechai pulls out the bill of sale as evidence, in what is understood as an echo of the sale of the birthright for a bowl of beans (Yaakov had added the bread as a ‘freebie’[24]); Mordechai, we are told, wore the bill of sale on his leg, near the thigh.[25]

Targum Unkolus relates this sale to Esav’s earlier sale of his birthright,[26] and reveals the motivation of the arch villain Haman to eradicate all of the Jews: He seeks to avenge or undo the sale of the birthright by Esav to Yaakov.

It is a fascinating and unmistakable fact that all through these various iterations of the epic struggle between Esav and Yaakov we find reference to the leg. When we first meet the brothers, Yaakov is clutching Esav’s leg (specifically his heel), but a closer reading points to this struggle as another expression of the struggle that began at the dawn of history, with the serpent:[27]

(13) Hashem, God, said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent beguiled me, and I ate.” (14) Hashem, God, said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, you are most cursed of all livestock and of every beast of the field. On your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. (15) I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will bruise your head, and you will bruise his heel.”

The angel of Esav, known in Jewish theological texts as Sama’el, is also identified with other manifestations of evil, most notably the Serpent.[28] The struggle with evil that had begun in the Garden of Eden is revisited in the in utero struggle between Yaakov and Esav, and it takes its toll on Yaakov, not coincidentally, in his thigh. When Yaakov fails to live up to his obligations, he becomes susceptible to the attack by the spiritual force that has been known variously as the angel of Esav, Sama’el, the Serpent, Haman, Amalek.

When Yaakov is victorious, he is called Yisrael. In the end, as foretold in the very beginning of this struggle, the serpent will be stepped on and crushed by the heel of Yaakov. Esav and his proxies will try to grab Yaakov by the leg – to try to neutralize the power of his heel, to attempt to make him bend his knees in homage. But the House of God will be built in the territory of the tribe of Binyamin, who did not bow before Esav and whose descendants refused to kowtow to Haman on bended knee. In that place, the children of Yaakov – Bnei Yisrael - will bend their knees only before the one true God.[29]

THEN THE REMAINING CAMP MAY ESCAPE in spite of him, for I will fight against him. He prepared himself for three things: to give him a present — as it states (Genesis 32:22) “So, the present passed before him”; for prayer — as it states (Genesis 32:10), “And he said, ‘O God of my father Avraham”; for war — as it states in this verse, “then the remaining camp may escape”, for I will fight against him (Tanchuma Yashan 1:8:6).

[14] Esav’s point of spiritual strength is commonly considered to be in his fulfillment of filial responsibility – honoring his father. Throughout the years he spent in Lavan’s household, Yaakov was unable to serve and care for his own parents, although it can be argued that he was in Lavan’s house in fulfilment of his parents’ instructions (other than perhaps returning sooner, a delay which his mother would have understood, for she said that she would send for him when it was safe, which she never did. As long as Esav’s anger seethed, Yaakov was obeying his mother, though Yitzchak was most likely in the dark regarding Esav’s hatred and the threats against Yaakov’s life. See Ahavat Yehonatan Alon Bechot. (However, based on a comparison between Bereishit 26:35 and 28:8, one could argue that Esav honored only one of his parents, his father, and didn’t care much for his mother.)

[15] The Sh”la’s language is far more clever than any translation can convey: a non-sin which is somehow reminiscent or an approximation of a sin, is called “dust,” avak, of a sin. The confrontation between Yaakov and the angel is described as wrestling – vaye’avek, a conjugation of the root avakthat conjures up the image of the dust that is raised in a physical struggle.
